Abdominally targeted, yoga-based physical exercises as a therapeutic intervention for inflammatory bowel disease

Activity: Talk or presentation typesPoster presentation

Description

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), comprised of Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), are chronic inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. Patients with IBD commonly suffer from symptoms that impact quality of life (QoL) parameters such as pain, fatigue, and stress.
Physical activity has positive effects on general well-being and stress; and may modify perceived pain, stress, sleep quality, and bowel circadian rhythm. In particular, physical activity that target the abdomen may assist in intestinal blood flow and therefore is thought by some to positively affect patient-reported outcomes. However, the effect of routine physical activity on disease measures and patient’s QoL is currently unknown.
