Description
According to the “Cube of Heymans” there are eight temperament types: sanguine, amorphous, passionate, sentimental, phlegmatic, neurotic, choleric, and apathetic, based on three axes/ dimensions: activity, emotionality, respectively primary vs. secondary functioning. The study explored which are the temperament types of Romanian basketball coaches, and whether temperament dimensions differ according to competitive success level. Fifty-four basketball coaches (24 female and 30 male) took part in the research: 19 medalists at National Championships at U16, U18, or senior levels, 9 medalists at U14 or U12 level, and 26 non-medalists. The gender distribution was balanced across the three investigated groups. A self-report tool was used based on Heymans’ Cube model of temperament. The Kruskal-Wallis H test showed no statistically significant differences (p > 0.05) between groups on any of the three temperament dimensions: activity, emotionality, and primary versus secondary functioning. Although the differences were not significant, small but potentially meaningful trends were observed that may have practical implications for coaching in high-pressure environments. Overall, high-performing coaches appeared more active and less emotional, suggesting a lower tendency toward impulsive reactions. They also demonstrated slightly higher sensitivity to specific events and details, possibly reflecting greater cognitive engagement and a stronger focus on continuous improvement.
