CLINICAL AND DEMOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF ORAL LICHEN PLANUS PATIENTS IN LATVIA: A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY
Introduction:
Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a prevalent mucocutaneous disorder affecting 1-2% of the population, predominantly middle-aged women. This study aims to analyze the clinical and demographic characteristics of OLP patients treated at the Oral Medicine Centre of the Institute of Stomatology, Riga Stradiņš University.
Materials and Methods:
The cohort comprised 34 adult patients diagnosed with OLP who underwent structured clinical evaluations. The study utilized a cross-sectional design with data collected from patient medical records and structured interviews. The methods involved a comprehensive analysis of demographic data, clinical forms, discomfort levels, treatment regimens, and the impact of chronic diseases and stress. Descriptive statistics were used to identify patterns and correlations.
Results:
Key findings reveal a higher prevalence of OLP among females (75.76%) with a mean age of 60 years. The reticular form was most common (47.1%), while the erosive form, causing significant discomfort, was more prevalent in females (75%). Sol Kenalog 0.2% and Ointment Clobetasol 0.05% were the main treatments, with Sol Kenalog being more effective. Chronic diseases like hypertension and gastrointestinal reflux were common (70.6%), complicating treatment. Additionally, stress was reported by 52.9% of patients, exacerbating the condition.
Conclusion:
This study highlights the necessity for personalized treatment strategies that consider the severity of the clinical form, patient comfort, and comorbid conditions. Further research is recommended to validate these findings and explore the underlying mechanisms of gender differences and the impact of comorbidities on OLP. These insights aim to enhance clinical practices and improve patient outcomes.
