Comparison of Anterior Capsulorhexis Opening Reduction after Combined and Sequential Cataract Extraction and Vitrectomy

Activity: Talk or presentation typesPoster presentation

Description

To compare the anterior capsular opening reduction in eyes treated with combined phacovitrectomy versus sequential phacoemulsification and vitrectomy.. A retrospective data review was performed of patients with cataract and coexisting epiretinal membrane (ERM) or macular hole. All patients underwent cataract extraction with phacoemulsification followed by a posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation. Combined or sequential pars plana vitrectomy for vitreoretinal disease was performed. The main outcome measures were preoperative and 1,5 months postoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and intraoperative and postoperative anterior capsular opening size (1 month following sequential surgery approach and 1,5 months following combined surgery approach).. Twenty-nine eyes were included in this study. In 16 cases patients had macular hole, but in 13 cases ERM. Seven (24,1%) eyes underwent combined phaco-vitrectomy surgery, twenty- two (75,9%) eyes had separate, sequential phacoemulsification then vitrectomy. Median preoperative BCVA was 20/125, postoperative- 20/45. One and a half months after operation BCVA improvements were seen (p 0,199). . Cataract extraction and vitrectomy for macular disease is effective to improve visual acuity. Combined and sequential operation approaches create similar anterior capsular opening reduction.
