Dialectics of Becoming: Rethinking Professional Identity Through the Hero’s Journey in Times of Global Transformation

Activity: Talk or presentation typesOral presentation

Description

Situated within the transdisciplinary discourse of “cohesive netting” and transcultural interconnections, this presentation explores the evolution of professional identity in an age defined by global crises, digital transformation, and social uncertainty. Drawing on a dialectical framework, it views identity as a living process shaped by tension and synthesis between the individual and collective, the local and global, the human and technological. The study examines how professionals reconstruct their sense of self and purpose amid disruption, revealing adaptation as a central mechanism of identity evolution. Based on reflective and thematic insights from research on professional transformation during crises, it argues that the experience of instability can act as a catalyst for growth, renewal, and ethical reorientation.
The presentation employs Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey as a metaphorical and reflective framework to trace the dynamic stages of professional becoming – departure, initiation, and return. Through this narrative lens, the professional path is understood as a cyclical process of loss and redefinition, challenge and integration, ultimately leading to renewed coherence and meaning. The session invites participants to engage in guided reflection, encouraging them to recognise their own trajectories of transformation and resilience. It suggests that in a world of interdependence and accelerated change, professional identity must be continuously re-woven – a process of conscious giving and receiving that sustains both individual integrity and collective belonging.
