Expectations Of Paediatric Surgeons From The Eupsa Global Surgery Committee: Results Of A Modified Delphi Study

Aim

To identify and prioritise expectations of paediatric surgeons, urologists, and trainees regarding the role of the newly established European Paediatric Surgeons’ Association (EUPSA) Global Surgery Committee.

Methods

A modified Delphi study was developed by the EUPSA Global Surgery Committee and conducted using an online survey. Round 1 consisted of an open-ended survey in which participants described up to five expectations of the EUPSA Global Surgery Committee. Example areas were provided as prompts, without restricting responses. Inductive thematic analysis identified overarching themes and subthemes. In Round 2, participants ranked six predefined themes, rated subthemes using a 10-point Likert scale, and selected their top three priorities. Countries were classified using the World Bank income classification (2025). Descriptive statistics were used.

Results

In total, 230 participants from 68 countries contributed to Round 1, with 49% practising in low- or lower-middle-income settings. Six themes emerged: training and mentorship; guidelines and educational resources; research and registries; advocacy and workforce development; infrastructure and service delivery; and cross-cutting support.

Fifty-eight complete responses were analysed in Round 2. Training-related support ranked highest (mean rank:1.95; 50% ranked first), followed by guidelines/knowledge resources and infrastructure. Fellowships or observerships (mean:9.24/10) and structured mentorship (mean:8.83/10) were the highest-rated subthemes and most frequently selected priorities. Patterns were consistent across income groups.

Conclusions

Paediatric surgeons across socioeconomic backgrounds view EUPSA engagement as valuable across multiple domains, with a clear prioritisation of capacity-building initiatives, particularly fellowships and mentorships. These findings provide a framework to guide the Committee’s strategic development and equitable global engagement.
