For the 7th year in a row Riga hosted the international urban planning event MadCity Riga 2023!In 2023 the event was dedicated to one of Latvia’s and the Baltics’ most prominent urban challenges- Soviet-era microdistricts’ revitalisation and re-humanisation.
The issues related to microdistricts are numerous: the housing is quickly ageing, public spaces don’t meet the modern urban planning principles, the urban environment doesn’t facilitate cooperation between residents.
The majority of Latvians still live in these microdistricts, therefore it is essential for us to look for new and unconventional solutions aimed at making microdistricts a more enjoyable and better-integrated place to live.
MadCity 2023 “Shining microdistrict” gathered urban planners, architects, public administration experts and other stakeholders, in order to collectively find answers to the questions of “if?” un “why?”, as well as to discuss the potential solutions that would make the microdistricts of the Baltic states “shine”.
