Eriks Melks (1923-2002) was one of Latvia’s best-known gynaecologists during the latter half of the 20th century. In 1959, Melks began to use vacuum excochleation as a form of abortion. Vacuum excochleation was a new way of ending a pregnancy in Latvia.
