Description

The WHO Pathogens Prioritization is a global scientific framework for epidemic and pandemic research preparedness, carried out in 2022-2024 [1]. It involved >200 scientists from >50 countries who evaluated ~30 viral families and one group of bacteria, involving ~1700 pathogens. This family-wise strategy strengthens the ability to quickly respond to unforeseen emerging pathogens, such as Pathogen X. The Parvoviridae Expert Group comprised seven experts from 5 countries, covering parvovirus human and veterinary clinical and molecular virology. Phase 1 of the process was a systematic online screening of the virus family members for transmission, virulence and countermeasures, ultimately resulting in a shortlist of Priority & Prototype pathogens and Pathogen X (carnivore protoparvoviruses), and other “Viruses of concern” (carnivore amdoparvoviruses + primate erythroparvoviruses), which was confirmed after discussions and voting by the Prioritization Advisory Committee (PAC), composed of all virus-family chairs, WHO, and other experts, in a meeting in Geneva in May 2024.
