Department of Biology and Microbiology encompasses more than 50 employees. Academic staff is involved in implementation of high-quality, modern study programmes in the undergraduate and continuing education programmes of Molecular and Cell Biology, Medical Genetics, Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Genetics and Neuroimmunology. Professors give advises and guide students’, resident physicians’ and PhD students’ scientific research. At this moment the department could be proud to have 16 employees with PhD degree, and there are more who will soon defend their doctoral thesis. Also professors participate actively in international and local professional associations (Association of Latvian Medical Microbiologists, European Association of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, American Association of Microbiologists, Latvian Society of Medical Genetics, Society of Neuroimmunologists, Latvian Association of Immunologists, Latvian Association of Nephrology, Latvian Association of Human Genetics, European Society of Human Genetics, etc.). It is also not forgotten also about professional academic and scientific development of department staff. Departments employees are involved in 25 scientific projects encompassing tree main research areas – Medicine & Life Sciences, Agriculture & Biology, Chemical Compounds. At this moment the results of scientific activities are reflected in 116 publications, and represented in many other scientific activities such as oral and poster presentations in international and local congresses, peer revive of publications. Also the head of our department and other active colleagues refer to invitation to represent their science-based view in media.
