Prof. Miķelis Grīviņš Group. Healthy and sustainable food systems

Organisation profile

Organisation profile

Our group is committed to enhance links between food supply and demand, to ensure resilient transition and sustainability, to improve food system regulations. In order to do that, we focus on consumption patterns, diets, and food-related practices, as well as cultural aspects of food and gender relations within food and consumption systems.

Our research concentrates on:

  • Bridging the gap between food production and consumption to support systemic change
  • Guiding food systems towards resilience and sustainability
  • Innovating and evaluating governance tools for food systems
  • Understanding and shaping sustainable food choices
  • Exploring food’s cultural roles and gender dynamics

Key discoveries:

  • We developed and analysed a prototype tool supporting citizen science activities. The research conducted by the team improves scientific understanding of citizen science and of forms it can be implemented.
  • We have developed models for analysing food consumption habits at the household level, offering researchers a more nuanced perspective on how individual diets are shaped.
  • Researchers have contributed to the development of a unique participatory methodology focusing on a comprehensive assessment of the social and environmental impacts of urban agriculture

We:

  • Employ quantitative sociological methods such as surveys, content analysis, analysis of secondary data, etc.
  • Conduct in-depth research by applying qualitative methods including interviews, focus groups, ethnographies and netnographies, workshops, etc.
  • Create business models encompassing CBA of social, economic and environmental performance.
  • Step out of disciplinary limits by connecting different theoretical and methodological frameworks, as well as fusing research with arts and industry focusing on novel digital tools, forms of participation and multi-actor approach.

Expanded Scope:

While food systems is our main focus, we engage in research tackling challenges related to environment, health and social security, and collaborating with various research fields and stakeholders.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. Our work contributes towards the following SDG(s):

  • SDG 8 - Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • SDG 16 - Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
