Automated hand washing quality control and quality evaluation system with real-time feedback

Project Details

Description

Relevance of the project Medical error caused by infections is in the list of top 10 medical errors. One of the main reasons for this is the insufficient performance and quality of hand washing performed by the medical staff before direct contact with the patient, which can increases the chances of infection spread. Project objectives Developing an automated hand wash quality control and hand wash quality evaluation system with real-time feedback. Project tasks 1) To compare the accuracy of hand wash movement detection between (a) video camera recordings and (b) sensor data from wearable devices with built-in inertial measurement unit. 2) Explore how to extend real-world hand washing registration datasets with synthetic data to facilitate training in ML classifiers. 3) To investigate the best ways and modalities (audio, tactile, or visual) to provide a real-time feedback to the medical professionals on the performance of the hand wash. 4) To evaluate the efficiency and the operation of the hand washing system in a simulated clinical environment by comparing the data provided by the system on the quality of the washing process with results obtained employing an UV light detecting system. Results to be achieved Extended handwashing data set and publications.
