Development of the Baltic-Nordic Network of Patient Safety Teachers

Project Details

Description

During the last decades, the interest in patient safety has notably increased in society; thus, the continuous improvement of competence in patient safety among healthcare staff and managers is essential. However, patient safety education is underestimated across Europe, a problem we also face in the Baltic and Nordic countries. This project, initiated in 2023, aimed to create the Baltic-Nordic Network of Patient Safety Teachers to bring together the teaching competence from Estonia, Finland and Norway. Since May 2023, we have achieved most of objectives. We have mapped the patient safety curricula and the materials and methods used for patient safety teaching in our universities, and shared the well-working practices in patient safety teaching: how to improve the content and methods of the teaching and how to involve the patients in patient safety teaching.
With the development of the patient safety teachers’ network, we expect to share our experience with other educational institutions in three countries and to promote the NPHE-2025/10282 Page 3 (6) Submitted - 03-Feb-2025 implementation of new teaching and learning principles in the field of patient safety. Our activities in 2025 and 2026 will focus on continuing enhancement of the PS teaching and learning strategy by focusing on the improvement of the patient safety educators’ skills and knowledge by creating the evidence based framework for the patient safety educators’ competencies. The involvement of three new partners from Estonia, Latvia and Sweden will further contribute to the dissemination of best practices in patient safety education in the Baltic and Nordic region.
