Abstract

Summary of Abstract: Women reported outcome measures related to after-birth care are analysed in Latvia via validated survey, changes in indicators allows to identify areas for improvement.
Introduction/Background: Evaluating mothers' perspective about quality of maternal and newborn care have become an important quality indicator. In 2021 survey that evaluated quality of care indicators during and around childbirth by using WHO framework was initiated in Latvia and dynamic analysis in ongoing and allow healthcare professionals (HCP) to understand and improve their practices.
Objectives: To compare patient-reported outcomes of maternal and newborn care that are related to after-birth care in 2020–2021 vs. 2022–2023.
Methods: Data were gathered from two surveys conducted as part of the
IMAgiNE EURO study, involving women aged 18 and older who gave birth in healthcare facilities in Latvia. A validated questionnaire evaluated the quality of maternal care. The 2020–2021 dataset included 2079 cases (Round 1) and 219, while the 2022–2023 dataset comprised 889 cases (Round 2), respectively. Data were analysed and percentage changes were calculated to track shifts over time. The described results are preliminary, as Round 2 is still ongoing.
Results/Discussion: Data reveals that improvement in breastfeedingsupport has increased (from 66.7% to 71.3%) over time. Staying with baby as long as mother wished showed almost no change (96.5– 96.4%). However, slight decline in indicators such as skin-to-skin contact was observed with 89.7% respondents experiencing this in 2020–2021 in contrast with 83.2% in 2022–2023; as well as early breastfeeding practices have worsen a bit with 93.2% in Round 1 and 83.4% in Round 2.
Conclusion: Results of our study reveals that irrespective of reported improvements in breastfeeding support by HCP, experienced early breastfeeding cases were declining. However, after care experience indicators remain relatively high. Multi-country surveys such as EURO IMagINE allows to compare data
within countries as well as systematically compare indicator changes in time, identifying areas where improvements should be made.
