Abstract
23 August 2019 marked the 30th anniversary of the day when two million people, demonstrating their unity and longing for freedom, joined hands for 15 minutes, forming a living chain that stretched for 600 kilometres and connected Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn ñ the capitals of the Baltic States. Is the youngest generation aware of this event and what have they heard about it? Would such an event be possible nowadays? These are the questions that 2019/2020 autumn term students were prompted to answer, and those answers form the basis for findings and conclusions as to how the youngest generation, who did not experience the most significant event of the Awakening period, view it on its 30th anniversary.
The paper makes use of studentsí answers from about 200 submissions, focusing on the means students used to express themselves: the stylistic devices they used to characterise their attitude towards the event, their knowledge of history (both handed down from generation to generation and gained in the classroom), as well as the way generational continuity is characterised regarding its role in preserving and strengthening national identity.
