Abstract

European Green Deal (EGD, 2019) envisages socio-economic restructuring plan to confront climate change therefore it is crucial to identify potential impacts of the restructuring plan on the social sustainability in a timely manner. As underlined in the related literature, the challenge with the EGD is to address together such issues as climate and inequality, sustainability and health, thereof it is important to ensure that the sustainable development is not only green but is also socially sustainable. Riga Stradins University (RSU) had recognized a research gap in the field of green and sustainable healthcare, thereof developed and in January 2024 launched the “GreenCare” project. The
aim of this research is to present the planned novelty and practical implications of the “GreenCare” project as well as investigate scientific literature on the field of green transition in the healthcare sector in order to develop a literature review on potential economic risks for socially responsible green transition. Research results show that the green transition encompasses such measures as green technologies and capacities, sustainable mobility, energy efficiency, renewable energy, adaptation to climate change. However, green transition addresses also issues that might cause economic risks and have effects on hospitals’ performance as well as people’s living and working conditions. To achieve a fair transition, Latvia's green healthcare strategy must consider social equity alongside environmental goals. Further research is crucial to identify specific economic risks within the Latvian context and develop targeted policies for a just and fair green transition for healthcare sector.
