Abstract
Introduction. The unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) is a congenital pathology with remarkable nasal deformity. The correction of the nasal deformity in patients with UCLP is a topical issue. There is no single methodology for nasal correction timing and methods to achieve both good functional and aesthetic results. As well, there are no well-established methods for nose aesthetic evaluation in objective and quantitative form.
Aim. The aim of the study is to verify adapted Anastassov and Chipkov’s [2003] scheme for nose
appearance in patients (aged 3–5) with UCLP from photos.
Material and methods. The retrospective analysis was carried out of the collected data from
patients with UCLP who had undergone primary nose and lip correction from 1995 to 2008 r in Rīga Cleft Lip and Palate Centre and who had standardised photos in frontal and columellar view. Out of 34 patients, 23 patients’ standardised photos of three years of age were included and 20 patients’ photos of five years of age also were selected for the study. For statistical analysis, Cohen’s kappa coefficient was calculated.
Results. Raters’ intra and inter variability was from 30–100%. Cohen’s kappa coefficient was 0.1–1.
Conclusions. The adapted Anastassov and Chipkov’s [2003] scheme for nose appearance evaluation was with high intra and inter raters’ variability. This scheme in two dimensional photos, however, should be limited and used with caution.
