Abstract
ATP-dependent proteolytic activity was detected in a crude extract of etiolated pea (Pisum sativum cv Alaska) epicotyls with phytochrome as a substrate. Only the far-red absorbing form of phytochrome served as the substrate for the protease. The activity was inhibited by diisopropyl fluorophosphate, leupeptin and antipain. ATP was required as a cofactor for the activity.
