Development of Student Foreign Language Competence at State Teacher Training Higher Education Institutions in Latvia (comparative Study)

Abstract

In the century we are living in the question of students' who will work as teachers after HEI graduation skills and competences adequate to the needs of the current situation in the labour market in Europe and the world arises, and foreign language competence is emphasized as an essential one. HEIs in general, as well as the ones that train teachers, involve various aspects of foreign language studying: foreign language study courses or programs taught in a foreign language included in the curriculum; using a foreign language as a medium when acquiring the content of a study course held by foreign guest lecturers or home lecturers; facilitation of student mobility and supporting mobility students to learn the study language, etc. The aim of the research was to investigate the present situation in foreign language learning possibilities at state teacher training HEIs in Latvia thus taking a look at what possibilities are there to develop students' foreign language competence.
