Abstract

Body dysmorphic disorder is characterized by complex and multifaceted symptoms. Those affected often have a high shame experience and a pronounced self-critical way of dealing with themselves. Both can massively impede the constructive handling of the chronified symptoms and represent centrally maintaining factors of the total problem. Based on a treatment example, the difficulties in the therapeutic course due to depreciating self-criticism and a lack of self-compassion of the female patient are elucidated and suggestions for meaningful supplements for psychotherapy are made.
