Abstract
Introduction.
Evaluation of growth results of jaws and dental arch relationships for patients with clefts in adulthood are important both for cleft team and the patients.
Aim.
Aim of this study was to analyse growth of maxilla, jaw and dental arch relations for patients with non-syndromic UCLP treated at Riga CLP centre in adulthood.
Methods.
Out of 27 consecutive patients born with unilateral cleft lip and palate from 2000- 2006 and treated at Riga CLP centre, the study included 19 non-syndromic patients with data available at an average age of 18.2 years (SD=1.8) (9 male, 10 female; 15 left-sided, 4 right-sided clefts)). Treatment protocol was as follows: presurgical Hotz plate followed by lip and primary nose plastic (Millard, 3-5 months)
and two-stage palatoplasty with posterior vomer flap soft palate plastic at 8-10 months and anterior hard palate plastic at 2-3 years of age, and alveolar bone grafting in mixed dentition at 7-10 years of age. Orthodontic treatment with different duration and speech therapy of various intensities was carried out to all patients. Cephalometric measurements of lateral cephalograms and Goslon yardstick evaluation on dental casts were done.
Results.
SNA angle was 74.3 degrees (SD=3.7) and ANB was -1.6 degrees (SD=4.4) . Goslon yardstick was grade 1 and 2 for 14 (74%) patients, grade 4 and 5 for 5 (26%) patients.
Conclusions.
Growth evaluation at an average age of 18.3 years for patients born with nonsyndromic UCLP and treated at Riga CLP centre was within the comparable range of other studies and objective need for orthognatic surgery was observed in 5 (26%) patients.
