Abstract
European Union (EU) enlargement has always been a complex and politically charged issue. Latvia’s stance is not special in this regard. Balancing the logic of consequences with that of appropriateness, Latvia has always taken a cautious approach to the idea of EU enlargement and managed to align its national position with the common stance amongst many other Member States, namely: ‘if everyone else runs, I will run too’. In other words, Latvia’s perspective has been that if the European Commission and other EU Member States support the accession of a particular country, then Latvia will not prevent it.
