Abstract

Adequate training in early care is important. Riga Cleft Lip and Palate Centre was one of partners from six different European countries which were involved in the European Union Erasmus+ programme to develop a downloadable short course to train those involved in the early care of babies born with clefts.

Materals and Methods: Healthcare professionals representing different specialities were questioned according to their knowledge about clefts and early cleft care and nursing before and immediately after multiplier event. During this event Erasmus+ project’s training modules and other information more specific for Latvia and treatment protocol in Riga Cleft Lip and Palate Centre were delivered. Questionnaire consisted of 34 questions where knowledge was self evaluated from 1 as the lowest to 10 as the highest level.
Results: In total 62 healthcare professionals participated in training and were questioned. Before training average score of knowledge was 5.4 and after training 8.5 points.
Conclusion: Front line healthcare professionals must have a basic knowledge of clefts and feeding. Erasmus+ project “Early Care Training Programme” was useful training for healthcare professionals to improve knowledge of early cleft care and nursling in Latvia. Training showed high effectiveness and is planned to be delivered to healthcare professionals on the regular basis by Riga Cleft Lip and Palate Centre.
