Influence of mobility and technological factors of mobility on the quality of life of older adults: An empirical study focused on mobility as a mediator

Background: Quality of life in older adults is becoming increasingly recognized, however, there is a paucity of research on the association between subjective perceptions of mobility and health in this age group. Objective: This study aimed (i) to explore the basis of mobility factors in older adults and their relationship with quality of life; (ii) to examine the effects of older adults’ perceived levels of health, financial security, and mobility on their quality of life; (iii) to elucidate whether the influence of mobility factors on the perceived quality of life in older adults is mediated by perceived mobility. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted among older adults living in the Czech Republic in January 2023. Older adults were interviewed by computer-assisted telephone interviewing and computer-assisted web interviewing. Quota sampling was used to obtain a sample size of 559 respondents. Results: Age, car availability, smart device use, and perceived health were identified as statistically significant factors influencing older adults’ mobility. Smart device use, internet use, perceived health, perceived financial security, and perceived mobility were found to be significant factors influencing quality of life. Mobility in nearby areas outside the home (zone 2) played a pivotal role in older adults' perceived quality of life, with perceived mobility acting as a mediating factor. Conclusion: These findings emphasise the need to address mobility-related issues, such as the impact of emerging technologies, assessing the effectiveness of government programs, and the role of healthcare interventions in enhancing the well-being of older adults.
