Abstract
Summary of Abstract: This study explores tendencies of lifestyle habits in Latvian women that may impact future menopause symptoms, focusing on the role of physical activity and diet.
Introduction/Background: Menopause marks the end of a woman's reproductive years, often accompanied by various symptoms. This study explores reproductive age women lifestyle habits, such as physical activity and diet, as it may influence menopause symptoms in the future.
Objectives: To explore lifestyle factors, such as physical activity and diet in reproductive-age women in Latvia.
Methods: A 47-question online survey was conducted with 431 Latvian women (ages 18–49) to assess their knowledge of menopause, symptoms, lifestyle habits, and the need for education. Respondents were divided into two age groups: Group 1 (18–39;38%) and Group 2 (40–49;62%). Data were analyzed using SPSS, including descriptive statistics, cross-tabulations, Shapiro-Wilk, and Mann-Whitney tests, with reliability assessed via Cronbach's alpha.
Results/Discussion: 93% of both groups (n = 401; p = 0,004) believed physical activity and a healthy diet (93%; n = 403; p = 0,02) can alleviate menopause symptoms. However, 63% (n = 272) reported low physical activity, with 55% in Group 1 (n = 90) and 68% in Group 2 (n = 182; p = 0,014). In Group 1, 33% (n = 54) had a BMI indicating overweight/obesity, compared to 63% (n = 168) in Group 2 (p < 0,001). Additionally, 25% (n = 109) of respondents are smokers. 13% (n = 56) abstain from alcohol, 17% (n = 75) drink 1-2 times per week, 62% (n = 268) consume alcohol less than once per week, while 8% (n = 32) drink more than twice per week. 50% (n = 217) agreed that menopause increases cardiovascular risks, affects sexual (59%; n = 258) and cognitive function (71%; n = 310).
Conclusion: This study highlights the awareness among reproductive age women in Latvia of the potential impact of lifestyle habits, such as physical activity and diet, on menopause symptoms. The results emphasize the need for increased awareness and targeted interventions to promote healthier lifestyle choices, which may alleviate menopausal symptoms and improve women's health during the menopause transition.
