Abstract
The article gives a short insight in the historical context surrounding Plato’s views on the
functions and structure of laws given in his political philosophy. This background enables us
to see knowledge as the core criteria for legislation in Plato, as well as to highlight the issue
of preludes. The article offers to see the understanding of laws as one of the possible answers
to an ethically and politically fundamental question in Plato’s political philosphy, namely,
what is justice.
