Abstract
The degree of liver inflammation is important in animals with chronic diseases. Controversary data still
exist regarding the role of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) as valid markers of liver fibrosis. Aim: to assess
liver MMP-2 and MMP-9 as markers of fibrosis and inflammation in minks with systemic mycoses. Materials
and methods: The liver tissue from 10 minks at age of 7 months were fixed in 12% formalin solution and
embedded in paraffin. The inflammation in the liver were determined by staining of slides with hematoxylin and eosin, Kupffer cells – by Perls, but MMP-2 and MMP-9 - by immunohistochemistry (IMH) methods. The
appearance of IMH results was evaluated by semiquantitative method in accordance to 4 grades: negative; (+)
few positive cells seen in the visual field; (+ +) moderate number of positive cells seen in the visual field and (+++) abundance of positive cells seen in the visual. The inflammation cells in the liver were counted and results were expressed as mean ± SD. Results: Morphological research of mink liver demonstrated inflammation with infiltration of macrophages, neutrophil leukocytes and lymphocytes. In tissue, incidence of appearance of MMP9 was higher in minks with moderate number of inflammatory cells and MMP-9 expression in liver than in minks with abundance of inflammatory cells and MMP-9 containing cells, and in animals with commonly indistinct infiltration of liver with inflammatory cells and few MMP-9 containing cells. However, expression of MMP-2 was similar in all animals investigated by us. Conclusion: From liver tissue MMPs, MMP - 9, but not MMP-2, might be used as markers of disease (inflammation) activity.
