Abstract

The article presents an overview of the theoretical framework for considering urban autonomies in terms of a laboratory for co-management of urban space. This mechanism is an example of how multi-band administration theory might be applied to cultural landscape types which – given their various formal, functional or substantive characteristics – do not lend themselves to the cooperation forms sanctioned for subsidiary community units. Urban autonomies encompass a limited, delineated area within which they unite committed individuals who bring knowledge and motivation to participate. Given these characteristics, urban autonomies may serve as co-management “prototypes”. The authors illustrate their narrative with Polish and foreign examples of projects and legal solutions.
