Abstract
In late March 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a disease outbreak notification regarding an iatrogenic outbreak of botulism in 87 patients who underwent bariatric (weight-loss) procedures at two Turkish hospitals. In this editorial, we look at the current outbreak situation, the availability of Botulism Neurotoxin (BoNT) in Turkiye, patient identification, and management. We further discuss the state of current evidence on the effectiveness of BoNT injections for weight loss and the public health response due to the current outbreaks.
