Abstract

The research was carried out within the Master's degree program "Supervision" at Riga Stradins University. The aim of the research was to identify whether there are differences between competencies of parallel process, transference and countertransference and the application of these competencies in the ECVision project and the professional standard of supervisors of the EU ANSE member states. The theoretical framework of the research is based on the understanding of psychodynamic concepts - parallel processes, transference and countertransference. Three research questions were formulated for the execution of the research goal. The research was conducted in two stages using a sequential mixed study design. In the first phase, thematic deductive analysis was performed to examine the professional competencies of the supervisors of the ANSE member states, focusing on the competencies of parallel processes, transference and countertransference. In the second stage, a survey of certified supervisors of the Latvian Association of Supervisors was conducted. 74 respondents took part in the survey. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis. The results of the research show that there is a difference between the parallel processes, transference and countertransference competencies in the ANSE ECVision project and the ANSE member states professional standards. The majority of Latvian supervisors acknowledged that the ability to recognize parallel processes, transference and countertransference affect the supervision process (at least 85% in each process). On average 88% of supervisors rate ability to recognize parallel processes, transference and countertransference as very important or rather important, which indicates that these are important skills or competencies. The results of the research also reveal the important role indicated by supervisors in the use of parallel processes, transference and countertransference in supervision and the impact on the supervision process. This indicates the potential of creating a “common language” among supervisors in Latvia. This opportunity was highlighted in the ECVision project, which aims to develop a European system for comparing and validating the competencies of supervisors in order to initiate broad comparability in supervisory education in Europe. The results of the research can be used for supplementing the standard of the Latvian supervisory profession and can be used for updating the standard of the supervisory profession.
