Abstract

The professional self-concept of nurses plays an important role in nurses' job satisfaction, work productivity, which leads to patient satisfaction, as well as in development of profession. On the other hand, nurses job satisfaction influences nurse plans of the future which are related to desire to remain in profession. Nursing self-concept is shaped and influenced by many different factors, one of which is global self-esteem. In the literature it is often claimed that the nurse's self-concept also affects the nurse's self-esteem and is interrelated. The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between the factors forming the professional self-concept, self-esteem and desire to remain in profession of practicing nurses. To achieve the goal of the study, a quantitative cross-sectional study was performed. Data were obtained using the following questionnaires: Nurses Self-Concept Instrument, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Nurse Retention Index and Author's Socio-Demographic Questionnaire. The study population consisted of 368 nurses practicing in Latvia with an average age of 40.7 years (SD=11.43), who were selected using a non-probable sample. Results revealed that there is a statistically significant relationship between some socio-demographic data groups like: age and self-esteem, education level and self-esteem, Latvian region and self-esteem, as well as between age and desire to remain in profession and Latvian region and desire to remain in profession. Statistically significant differences were also found between the respondents' answers by age group, level of education, length of service and the existence of a certificate in relation to different sub-scales of self-concept. In this study, the original nursing professional self-assessment tool (NSCI) has been translated and adapted in Latvian language, which can also be used in further research. Based on the results obtained, the professional self-concept of nurses plays an important role in relation to self-esteem and the desire to remain in profession. It should also be taken into account that the nurse's self-concept is influenced by various socio-demographic factors.
