Translated title of the contribution: Kinship and state performance in contemporary Latvia

Research output: Book/ReportBookpeer-review

Abstract

While paying attention to the concepts of state and kinship, the authors of this book explore the multifaceted environment in which the modern Latvian state is performed. The collection consists of an introductory chapter and nine body chapters. This book joins the range of scholarly literature that claims that kinship is fundamentally important in contemporary Western countries and is most probably here to stay (e.g., Thelen and Alber 2018; McKinnon and Cannell 2013). Furthermore, the authors of the book indicate that the very conceptual distinction between state and kinship and predictions about the imminent end of kinship to be part of the beliefs included in the Western kinship system. The book, on the one hand, engages in a theoretical debate about the nature of kinship and role of it in relation to state and, on the other hand, uses ethnographic research to examine embeddedness of kinship in contemporary Latvian society
