Abstract
The article “The Specifics of Social Work in Schools: Opportunities and Challenges” by Valēriia Obozna, a Riga Stradiņš University graduate, and her thesis supervisor Mārtiņš Moors, explores the evolving role of social support professionals in Latvian schools. Based on Obozna’s bachelor thesis, the article compares the functions of social pedagogues and social workers, analyzing their overlapping tasks in school settings. Drawing on interviews with professionals and school leaders, the study highlights how social pedagogues increasingly take on responsibilities aligned with social work—such as crisis intervention and case management—underscoring the need for clearer role definitions and potential specialization in school social work.
